Dr. Glenn van Looy

Born in Bonheiden, province of Antwerp (Belgium), Glenn Van Looy has quickly established himself as one of the leading euphonium players of the twenty-first century.

Glenn was introduced to the instrument at a young age by his father, bass trombonist Geert Van Looy. After immediately falling in love with the euphonium, he continued his studies at the Secondary School of Art in Antwerp and the Lemmens Institute in Leuven under the guidance of Nick Ost.

His career began in a local wind band led by his father. His talents were quickly recognised when he was recruited at the age of eleven as 2nd euphonium of the festival section Festival Brass Band. At the tender age of twelve he started as solo euphonium of Brass Band Heist, a position he held until he joined one of the best bands in Europe, Brass Band Buizingen, in 2013.

Glenn’s incredible journey as a soloist has seen him win prestigious competitions in Europe and beyond. His contribution to band performances has been celebrated through soloist awards at the Flemish Open Brass Band Championship and twice at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Holland). He has also received honours from the UK’s historic brass band competitions, including the National Brass Band Championships 2011, the British Open Senior Cup 2011 and the British Open Senior Trophy 2010; all performed with the Beaumaris Band (Wales).

He won the solo competitions of his native Belgium in all categories, the European Solo Championship in Linz (Austria), was the youngest winner of the British Open Solo Championship and the coveted title of International Soloist of the Ern Keller Memorial in Sydney (Australia). He has also won other prestigious titles; in South Korea, France, Finland and Belgium.

As a freelance musician, Glenn has performed with various ensembles including all the leading brass bands in Belgium, the Leyland Band (England), the Beaumaris Band (Wales), the Cooperative Funeralcare Band (Scotland), the Wallberg Band (Switzerland) and the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. As a concert soloist he has performed with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, the European Youth Brass Band, the Yorkshire Building Society Band (England), the Brighouse and Rastrick Band (England), the Brass Band Willebroek (Belgium), the Manger Musikklag (Norway) and the Royal Symphonic Band on the Belgian Guides, the Royal Band of the Belgian Air Force and other brass bands in Belgium.
